Copper Electrode Tip for Arc & Submerged Arc Furnaces

Pure copper electrode tips machined on our own dedicated production line, for electric arc furnaces, submerged arc furnaces and ferroalloy plants. Built to your drawing, or copied from the worn tip you send us.

The same part, different names

This part is described differently from plant to plant. If any of the terms below match what you buy, you are on the right page.

In North America

Electrode tip, electrode head, copper contact tip, contact shoe, electrode nose. Dimensions are quoted in inches, threads in UNC / NPT unless you specify otherwise.

In Europe

Electrode head, copper electrode tip, contact piece; Elektrodenkopf, Kontaktbacke, tête d'électrode. Dimensions in millimetres, threads metric or to your drawing.

How we quote

Send the drawing, the worn tip or photos with the outside diameter, length, bore and thread. We work in inches or millimetres and the drawing carries both.

Machined from solid copper

The electrode tip is the last copper part in the current path before the arc. It has to carry very high current, keep contact resistance low and survive the heat radiating off the furnace, so the material and the machining both matter.

We produce tips on a dedicated arc furnace electrode tip line, CNC turned and milled from solid high-conductivity copper. Contact faces are machined rather than cast, and water-cooled designs carry an internal passage with the connection placed where your installation needs it.

Because the part is machined to a drawing, we can reproduce a tip from any manufacturer — send the worn one and we copy it.

What you get

  • High-conductivity pure copper, or your specified grade
  • Machined contact faces for low contact resistance
  • Internal water passage where the design calls for it
  • Threads, flanges and hole patterns to your drawing
  • Tin or silver plating on the contact face if required
  • Supplied loose or assembled to the cable or holder

Electrode tips are not a catalogue item — every furnace has its own geometry. Dimensions, cooling arrangement and connection are confirmed on the drawing before production.

Applications

Electric arc furnace

Steelmaking EAF installations, where the tip carries the current into the electrode circuit.

Submerged arc furnace

Ferroalloy, calcium carbide and silicon plants, with the tip exposed to continuous high radiant heat.

Ferroalloy refining

Refining furnaces producing ferrochrome, ferronickel, ferrosilicon and silicon-manganese.

Copied from your worn tip

Most orders replace a tip that is already in service. If the original drawing is lost, photos of the worn part with a few measured dimensions are enough for us to prepare a manufacturing drawing for your approval.

Frequently asked questions

What is an electrode tip?
The copper part at the end of the current path that makes contact in the electrode circuit. It carries very high current, so it is made from high-conductivity copper with machined contact faces.
Are the tips water cooled?
Where the design calls for it, yes — an internal water passage is machined into the body with the connection placed to suit your installation. Non-cooled designs are also supplied.
What copper do you use?
High-conductivity pure copper, T2 / C11000 or the grade you specify.
Can you copy our existing tip?
Yes, and most orders are handled this way. Send the worn part or clear photos with the outside diameter, the length, the bore and the thread, and we prepare a drawing for your approval before machining.
Can the contact face be plated?
Tin or silver plating is available on the contact face where lower contact resistance or better oxidation resistance is required.
Do you supply tips assembled to the cable?
Yes. Tips can be supplied loose, or crimped and assembled to a water-cooled cable as a complete unit.
